TO FIND OUT MORE There are many websites about Georges Brassens and his work, in various languages. We offer a few examples here; you will easily find others via links within the sites below, or via the Search Engines. At the Georges Brassens American Fan Club is webmaster William Hinshaw's personal appreciation of Brassens' poetry. The site includes his own translations of Brassens' songs and a selection of translations from web correspondants. Passage is an international Association aiming to promote the diffusion of Brassens' work outside France. Projet Brassens is a member of Passage. The introductory pages of the site are in French, but there's an English version of the page about Georges Brassens. American poet/writer Jack Foley has published some articles about Brassens, including song translations, in his weekly column "Foley's Books" within the online magazine The Alsop Review. A great homage to the Master. Don't look here for links to other Brassens sites, however: you'll find these via the American Fan Club website mentioned above.
Ken Knabb, American translator of Guy Debord's films, has written a page about Brassens at www.bopsecrets.org/recent/brassens.htm. He introduces the page thus: Projet Brassens publishes 3 booklets, including English translations of Brassens' songs on our CDs La marine and Le vent, plus notes about the songs by Dr Ted Neather. Details are on our mail order page. Within Julian Barnes' book of essays "Something to Declare" (Picador 2002) is one titled 'Spending their deaths on holiday', a homage to Boris Vian, Jacques Brel, and Georges Brassens. Jack Foley publishes printed excerpts of the articles and translations which appear on The Alsop Review website in a paperback called "Some Songs by Georges Brassens". Copies are available from Projet Brassens, details within our mail order page. The only other publication in English that we know of is a scholarly treatise by lecturer in French at Reading University Sara Poole, called "Brassens - Chansons". This is a useful paperback for anyone undertaking a serious academic study of Georges Brassens' work, and for aficionados. Copies are available from Projet Brassens, details within our mail order page.
...you can find photos, cartoons, lyrics, biographies of Brassens, midi files, CDs, the latest news and comments from Brassens' many interpreters and aficionados, and much more... Analyse Brassens invites visitors to contribute their own analyses of Brassens' use of language in his songs. La page de Georges Brassens is a lively and informal reference site.
Gérard Bloncourt's site Georges Brassens is another good reference source in French. It's a hi-tech site, and you may find you need the latest browsers and plug-ins to access all the details. We are very grateful to Gérard for his help with the technical aspects of setting up our own site. Auprès de son arbre specialises in details of CDs, books and journals about Brassens, and French associations dedicated to him. The site's title derives from one of Brassens' songs, "Auprès de mon arbre", about his favourite tree. www.Brassens.info has a biography, photographs, and information about the poets set to music by Brassens. You'll also find comprehensive track soundclips, if you have the software to play them. Emre Poyraz from Turkey has pointed out a song by Georges Moustaki in homage to Georges Brassens, called "Les amis de Georges". He tells us that you can find the French lyrics at the official Moustaki website. You can find the lyrics to many French chansons at paroles.net. If french chanson is your thing and you have a broadband/ADSL connection, you can check out the 24 hour webcast L'air du temps on Boston's WUMB Folk Music Radio. American Professor of French Brian Thompson, a connaisseur of la chanson française, broadcasts his selection. |
